Like many people, I was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of Mr. Hiroshi Osaka*. It was so sudden, I thought, it couldn’t possible be true. It must have been some kind of mistake.
Although I had never met him, I had a very deep respect for his work. During my time at Bandai Entertainment, I worked on many of the shows he was involved in, including of course Mobile Fighter G Gundam and The Mars Daybreak (Kenran Butousai).
G Gundam was a personal favorite of mine, because, although it could be and often was dismissed as “Street Fighter meets Gundam,” there was a real depth to the underlying story. And at the heart of that story were the characters. Domon. His unfortunate family. His new friends, fellow Gundam fighters, and soon-to-be Shuffle Alliance members. His rivalry with his former Master, the larger-than-life Master Asia. And of course, the story of his evolving relationship with Rain.
And no matter how great the writing, the pacing, and the animation was, it all hinged around the character designs. If you didn’t like these people, if you didn’t feel they could exist and be real in this surreal world, it wouldn’t have worked.
Osaka-san brought to life a universe of characters who populated this world and made it real. And that is an incredibly rare talent.
I am sorry that I never had a chance to meet the man and tell him how much I admired his work, and how the shows he helped to create brought a smile to my face on many, many occasions.
My deepest sympathies go out to Osaka-san’s friends and family, and his coworkers at BONES. I know they will all struggle with the burden of this loss.
Thank you, Osaksa-san, for making the world a more fun place.
